St. Joseph is part of a rich history of Alice, the Hub of South Texas. The work and dedication of the people of Alice to build and maintain the parish and meet the needs of all the faithful has been a saving grace for the town. St. Joseph has even been a refuge for Dominican Fathers coming from Mexico during the Cristero War, the religious persecution under President Calles.
It was thanks to these Fathers that St. Joseph is the thriving parish it is today as they shepherded the parish for 55 years until 1986 when Diocesans priests were assigned to the parish, beginning with Fr. Roger Smith.
Throughout Catholic history, the seeds of faith have been watered in the hearts of the faithful by the love, sacrifice and dedication of many good and faithful priests, sisters, and lay persons, and it is no different with the Catholic Church in Alice, Texas. May God be praised and continue to prosper the work of our hands.
